Whitefoord Smith, who was a Methodist minister in the South Carolina Annual Conference, joined the Wofford faculty as professor of English in 1855. He remained on the faculty except for a brief period when he was president of Columbia College until 1893. His daughter, Julia Smith, donated funds to name the college's first library in his memory.
