Description
Maria Scott Barron Wofford was an east Tennessee native who married the Rev. Benjamin Wofford in 1836. She brought some wealth to the marriage and supported and encouraged his thoughts about founding a college. After his death in 1850, she remained in Spartanburg for several years. The college gave her a place at some ceremonial events. Two of her nephews attended te college. She later moved with a niece's family to Wisconsin, where she died in 1883. She sent portraits of herself and Benjamin Wofford to the college with the requirement that they be displayed together.
