Major General James Wilkinson authorizes Simeon Knight to pay volunteers what they are due. New Orleans, 05 January 1813.
Transcription
Head Quarters N. Orleans January 5th 1813 Sir You cannot more essentially serve your country, and oblige me than by promoting the levy of volunteers; - If you have instructions to make partial payments of bounty to their Service, I do hereby authorize you to pay the whole sum allowed by Law, - on the attestation and muster of the Individuals, of which you will advise the paymaster general and require correspondent funds; to meet this extra disbursement. On arrival of the Tennessee Volunteers, you will be pleased to wait on the Commanding Officer, and if pay be due his corps, you will make it, agreably to regulations, - in the most prompt & conciliatory manner in you power. - Stay where you are, serve your country and you will hold my respect & esteem.
