Description

John C. Calhoun, at the time of writing U.S.Secretary of State, requests that Robert Oliver Gibbes, the son of a "highly respectable citizen of Carolina," be listed as an applicant for Midshipman. Dated December 3, 1844.

Transcription

State Dept. 3d. Dec. 1844 My dear Sir The enclosed is from a highly respectable citizen of Carolina, now at Paris. In conformity with his request, I will thank you to place the name of his son, Robert Oliver Gibbes, on the list of applicants for Midshipmen’s warrant in your office, with the letter. Yours truly, J.C. Calhoun
