Description

During the 2nd Tabasco Campaign a midshipman (Francis Gregory) transfers ships due to health. A copy of the surgeon's recommendation is included with subsequent orders to a schooner (U.S. Petrel); signed by M.C. Perry and endorsed on the back by Franklin Buchanan.

[folder includes 2 manuscripts concerning the transfer of midshipman Francis Gregory] U.S. Flag Ship “Germantown” Vera Cruz, 7th September, 1847 Sir, You will proceed to Tampico in the first Army Steamer sailing for that place, I having obtained permission to take passage from the proper officer / and on arriving there, report yourself to the Commanding officer of the U.S. Schooner “Petrel” for duty on board that vessel. I am, respectfully, Your obt. Servt. M.C. Perry Commanding Home Squandron Passed Midshipman Francis Gregory U.S. Ship “Germantown” “Copy” U.S. Flag Ship Mississippi Off Tabasco River June 25th 1847 Comm. M.C. Perry Comm. U.S. Home Squandron Gulf of Mexico Sir, In accordance with your order I have Examined the ? letter from Passed Midn. Gregory, and recommend that his request be granted provided orders can be given to him to any other than, a Steam Vessel. Considering his late bad health, I would so suggest that he be ordered to a Sloop, instead of one of the smaller vessels. I am very respectfully Ser, “signed” Lewis W.
