John C. Calhoun, at the time of writing U.S.Secretary of State, requests that Robert Oliver Gibbes, the son of a "highly respectable citizen of Carolina," be listed as an applicant for Midshipman. Dated December 3, 1844.
State Dept. 3d. Dec. 1844 My dear Sir The enclosed is from a highly respectable citizen of Carolina, now at Paris. In conformity with his request, I will thank you to place the name of his son, Robert Oliver Gibbes, on the list of applicants for Midshipmen’s warrant in your office, with the letter.
