Captain J.K.F. Mansfield Corps of Engineers Fort Pulaski, Savannah, Ga. Fort Hamilton, N.Y. 25th Feby. 1842 My dear Captain Before the receipt of your letter, the officers who had interested themselves in the object of the publication presented in the Circular to the Corps which I forwarded to you on the 27 Decr last, had concluded so far as they were concerned to relinquish it; not so much on account of its favourable reception by the other officers, as there have been reception by the other officers, as there have been but few heard from who have declined joining in the measure, as from an idea that some have appeared to entertain that it originated in a different spirit from that which governed them, viz. a desire for the improvement of themselves & the advancement of the Corps. I ought perhaps to have told you in my former letter that I can claim no merit in its origin. In that I had no share but from the motives just stated, gave it my hearty concurrence & identified myself with it so far as to Sign the address to the Corps & to do all in my power to promote its success. Very truly R.E. Lee
