Description

This form "No. 40 Special Requisition" details the requisition of 100 pounds of horse shoes, 100 frost nails, and 2 bushels of stone coal by a Confederate States unit. Turner Ashby signs as commander, a Captain William Miller signs as a Quartermaster. Formerly a U.S. form, altered to read "C.S." in one instance. Dated 3 February 1862, Martinsburg (present-day West Virginia).

No. 40 Special Requisition 1862 Febry 3 For: One Hundred pounds Horse Shoes One Hundred Frost nails - Two Bushels of Stone Coal - [note: the inventory chart is been crossed out] I certify that the above requisition is correct; and that the articles specified are absolutely requisite for the public service, rendered so by the following circumstances: Horses needing shoeing. Jno Winfield Capt Capt McMillen a Quartermaster U.S. [note: U has been crossed out and replace with C] Army, will issue the articles specified in the above requisition. Turner Ashby Commanding Recieved at Martinsburg the 3rd of Febry 1862 of Capt McMillen a Quartermaster U.S [note: U crossed out and replaced with C] Army, One Hundred pounds Horse Shoes and One hundred Frost nails in full of the above requisition.
