Handwritten note on rites of matrimony performed by Peter Cartwright, a Methodist clergyman, dated February 6, 1834.
Transcription
The People of the State of Illinois, To any minister of the gospel, or other authorised person: Greeting. These are to License and permit you to join in the holy bands of matrimony Mathew Morehead and Elizabeth Snodgrass of the County of Sangamon, and State of Illinois, and for so doing this shall be your sufficient warrant. Given under my hand and seal of office at Springfield, in said County, this 24th day of January 1834 G.R. Mathing This is to certify that the rites of Matrimony were celebrated between the within named Mathew Morehead and Elizabeth Snodgrass on the 6th of February 1834 by me a minister of the gospell of the Methodist Episcopl Church given under my hand Peter Cartwright
